Introduction: Unveiling the Strains in Law Enforcement
Law enforcement agencies today face a unique set of challenges, with work-related stress stemming from both organizational (strains related to the agency and management) and operational (strains related to the job nature) domains. Recent studies have indicated that excessive workloads, coupled with a lack of counseling and social support, contributes significantly to emotional exhaustion and burnout among officers.(1)
In professions such as law enforcement, the prevalence of PTSD is especially pervasive, largely attributed to the frequent exposure of high-stress calls, traumatic events and the inherent unpredictable dangers of the job. Public safety officers face a staggering 25.6 times higher risk of developing PTSD or related mental health conditions (2) compared to those in other professions. This heightened risk contributes to the adoption of destructive coping methods, self-harm, and tragically, a higher incidence of suicide among officers.
Alarmingly, law enforcement personnel die by suicide annually more than other first responder group, with estimates that up to 300 police officers commit suicide every year (3). This figure is likely an understatement, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and support for mental health and wellbeing in these critical roles.
To adapt to the evolving dynamics of policing, agencies must prioritize officer wellness and work-life balance. This case study explores how the San Diego Sheriff's Department tackled these issues head-on with the innovative ESNTL Wellness platform.

The San Diego Sheriff's Department, like many law enforcement agencies, recognized the need for a holistic approach to tackle stress and promote well-being.
The lack of visibility into workforce well-being became a pressing concern, prompting the department to seek innovative solutions.

In response to these challenges, the San Diego Sheriff's Department took a groundbreaking step by introducing ESNTL Wellness, a transformative well-being platform which harnesses the unique sensor technology and strong privacy protections built into Apple Watch and iPhone, becoming the first emergency responder group in the nation to introduce and pilot the platform.
